It has grown on me over the years but I'm not sure I'm that person anymore. I think of it fondly, sort of like one thinks of a friend from childhood that sort of got lost over the years. For several reasons I need to move on by going way back in my life and re-learn stuff I forgot on the way.
This blog somewhat represents that period of forgetting who I am and who I wanna be and that probably one of the main reasons I can't keep it up.

For those of you who want to keep on reading what's going on at the moment and what I do and such, leave a comment or contact me any other way that comes to mind (twitter pigeon, facebook or e-mail,...)

It has been fun, I had a good time.
Godspeed.finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-40211198176528220842009-07-14T14:29:00.005+02:002009-07-14T15:10:22.597+02:00Are you coming to the Toga Party? On August 22nd 16 people will be looking for a missing Secret Agent and the secret papers he carries with him. It's a real life role playing game.

As you all know I'm a huge fan of all things Fringe, X-Files and other suspense stuff (also with a pinch of humor, like Chuck) and wouldn't trade in my MMORPG's for a lot of money (especially now, that I'm finally in outland with my priest)

Now a bunch of brilliant people came up with the idea to use smart phones and other gadgetry to make their own mainstream LARP.
Do I really need to say it? I'm over the moon about it. If I were Mary Murphy I'd scream really loud and have them all on a hot tamale train to somewhere.

I'm not sure how the 16 poeple will get picked and who choses them, but I sincerely hope to take part in all the fun.

Wish me luck!
Yours truly,
@AgentPorterfinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-20621113255518609972009-07-03T11:09:00.002+02:002009-07-03T11:34:37.263+02:00in which I quit my job and revive my blog for a bitI haven't been around much lately. Due to the invention of twitter and facebook and other social networks I've reduced my brain waves to 140 character messages at a time and not much else.

I quit my job on Tuesday, I was urged to by my own body and my gf and for once I followed the advice given to me.
I feel a lot better now that I know my time here is finite. No more fighting for leave and no more fighting for paid overtime. Those are fights other guys fought for me decades ago - I shouldn't have to again, because of some colonists who haven't read the memo.
There were other things going horribly horribly wrong and I realised that I wasn't talking about much else anymore. It does put a strain on yourself, your partner and the relationship you lead. Not. Good. At. All.

Also, I was getting more and more exhaused until my doctor finally proclaimed that I'm her newest Burn-Out Patient. Great.

So, I'll still have to fight my way through July and the I'll be free. Free to sleep in, free to take time for myself, free of obligations, free of money probably too. But I don't care because I live in a wellfare state and if I really have to I'll find a job quick.

So, that's about the news I have so far, but I'll probably be back with some more soon and let you know how the trip to Budapest went.

Have a good Week-end.finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-88182903475406588782009-03-23T16:00:00.004+01:002009-03-23T16:25:48.186+01:00Rock your vote!hi folks,
I've been on some sort of hiatus with this blog and I have no good excuse for it.
I've been busy starting another blog about my academic life and work. let's not talk about work.
Also, I've been playing quite a bit of World of Warcraft (not as much as I'd like thought) and that leads to a problem!
I have three character which I really like but becomes more and more evident that I need to focus on one of them. If I keep playing all of them, none of them will ever be a higher level and I'll have to play a fair share of quests double and twice. That will grow boring!

I have decided to give you all a short profile of all of those characters and let you decide for me.

Character I: Night Elf Warrior, Velcro, lvl 24
I like him because he will not die even if he gets pummeled hard. He can deal with more than one enemy at a time. While it is a lot of fun being front and center, right where the action is, it is often tiresome to keep the target in optimal fighting distance and right in front of me. Velcro is not very graceful or sneaky but has his fighting qualities and gets really cool weapons and armor.

Character II: Dwarf Priest, Viviane, lvl 22
I like her because she's a Shadow priest in the making. That means she completely sucks now and will die if you so much as look at her the wrong way, but she will be quite powerful with time. also, she can heal the party members and resurrect them if necessary. It will be good to have her in a group, once her casting time is shorter. I like playing Viv when I keep in mind that it might be hard now, but will be kick-ass later. She's all about the future.

Character III: Human Mage, Vareen, lvl 11
She's the "youngest" and it will take a while until I have her where the others are, but she already kicks ass and will probably continue to do so. She deals quite a bit of damage and using one healing potion she can kill mobs 4-5 lvls higher than her. I like the powers she has and the way she fights. As mentioned before it will be quite some time until I get to the interesting part of playing if I stick to her.

so, there you go. I like all three of them and will continue to play with them from time to time, but I need a main character and can't decide. please help me!

finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-2176442282492082592009-02-09T13:01:00.005+01:002009-02-09T13:33:33.555+01:00the omnipotent labour wizardIt's been very quiet around here, I know.
I've been pretty busy with a lot of stuff and it will probably stay that way, but I have wanted to come back here and write something for a couple of days now and not even the weekend would provide enough time for that, so I'm using work time for blogging - I think it's a great idea!

I do still love my job and I still like the people I work with, but like with everything else, a look under the hood reveals a couple of holes in the oil can.

Like for instance, my company hasn't really come up with an image for themselves. We supposedly have a done marketing and business plan, but it doesn't seem they know where they want to go with it.
I was hired to run the office in all it's administrative aspects and do a little marketing on the side. I have done 38 hrs of marketing and business development and about 2 hours of admin work each week.
I've been designing business card drafts for a while now, coming up with different messages and styles but there is still no decision because it seems noone wants to be responsible for the final say in "who we are or who do we want to be".
It's a bit nerve wrecking, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I keep incorporating changes but it seems to never end.

Today, I need to hand in our video reel for a fair taking place in march. It's basically 2 minutes of any kind of video material we want to be played in a loop with other companies' videos.
One would think that such a thing exists already OR in our case as we are a new company subsidiary, we would have a graphic designer, animation company or something like that doing the video for us...that would mean someone would have to choose a subcontractor and make a decision on what we want based on who we are and what we want to be to other people.
Any guesses? Yes, correct the video was done by ME. In fact, I'm still trying to make it look ok. It's not that bad given the situation but it's nothing like it should look. Needles to say I'm slightly more than tinkering around and not at all qualified to do this. but being the resident geek will give you assingments you don't want.
I would volunteer to do such final decisions on what we want a video to look like but that would mean that I'd run the company and I don't get paid that much.
but if you think it's bad for a presentation video and a business card if you haven't really come up with a company profile yet, think again.

Next week we need to write a briefing paper for the fair staff, so they know what our company is and what we do...
It gets even better. In two weeks time we need to have - drumroll please - a press kit ready for all the media people who will be there at the fair.
To be honest it's kind of my favorite train wreck to be. I'm looking forward to who it's gonna be the one who writes the damn press kit because sure as hell, it's not gonna be me.

All of this might sound a little ranty. Well, it is but it doesn't do my job justice. There are things I need to vent but most of the time I'm having fun and I like what I'm doing.
I still have to figure out though, why I always end up getting jobs better suited for omnipotent labour wizards. I don't think I have had a job, where I have only (or at least mostly only) done what is in my job description.finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-78402346366489315962009-01-02T15:58:00.003+01:002009-01-02T16:13:54.687+01:00Not a very sad good-byeDuring lunch break today, I came across two videos that explained a lot about the state America is in.
the first one was the last Barney cam video. I guess it's my own fault for watching, what did I expect, seriously. Seriously!
So Barney was in charge of christmas decoration in the white house or something, that's one thing. That was actually kinda cute. Bbut what the hell was the opening with the first family supposed to be? Jenna (with her arm in plaster) kneeling on the hard wood floor next to her husband comfortably placed in a chair. I can accept the very bad acting, after all it's the Bush's not the Reagans, but I have a hard time getting over the picture of Jenna and Henry and the way they were "seated".

The second video is President Bush's tour of the oval office. My gran couldn't have done a better job repeating the same information all the time and not remembering her previous sentences. She could've stammered and stumbled her way all through the presentation, just like W.
The only difference? Well, she's a bit older and senile. She's allowed not to remember what she talks about. she's not running a coutry.
They don't do ANYTHING. They are not pretty, they are not a fun gadget to play with, they have nothing speaking FOR them. They have, however, a lot speaking against them. They are loud, they stink, they're dangerous, they disturb animals, old people,..., babies, they are not very environmental, etc.

Fireworks, at least are pretty.

That's why gf and I stay at home and have a nice comfy evening with computer games and food, watching the fireworks from our window.

What will/did you guys do for new years? Let me qualify that, I don't have anything else that I WANNA do.

Does that ever happen to you? You agree with yourself on having a slow day on the couch with nothing much to do, and then you're bored but not bored enough to actually start working off things on your to-do list?

That's what is happening to me right now. I played an old video game and now that I got bored with it I can't bringt myself to get up from the couch.

Oh, and by the way, how is it possible that the two biggest Austrian supermarket chains don't sell cider?finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-40977818293023125942008-12-20T09:48:00.004+01:002008-12-20T10:08:14.329+01:00ultimate geekdom and buying presentsdon't you love days that start slow?
It's not that I have nothing to do or anything (quite the opposite, actually), but my sister is sleeping over on the couch in the living room and that means I can't get up without waking her.
Now, that sounds worse than it actually is, because I'm well prepared.

Gf and I had our laptops ready for use at the side of our bed and are now in bed feasting on online procrastination. Other people have breakfast in bed, we postpone eating for computer time in bed (also, I'm not hungry yet).

Also, I wanted to clear up yesterday's crypic: It was a regular christmas thoughtfulness, about how people are showing their worst side instead of their most peaceful and lovable ones - all in the name of the most important holiday in the western hemisphere...
wouldn't you think that a financial crisis would lead to less people in the shops and a return to the more traditional values of this holiday season?
No, I was tackled by a hockey mom buying christmas presents on Thursday, because I was too close to her sons new favorite video game (of which were a thousand more on the display). I didn't even want that game, I was just passing by the section because I needed to in order to get to the concert ticket selling place...
damn, you anonymous hockey mom, I'll remember you for next year, you betcha!finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-76163620154243062322008-12-19T18:39:00.000+01:002008-12-19T18:40:48.645+01:00Bi-emotional christmasThe season is getting to me by now. I'm becoming more and more thoughtful and it will take a couple of cleaning sessions before i sort all of these emotions, before i'm ready to stop that train of thought.

On the other hand i'm really cheerful. A lot of things have fallen into place i draw a lot of energy from that.

Also, i would like to apologise for all the cryptic-ness...i'll probably clear that up when i'm not blogging via phone while trying to remember a shopping list with my scatterbrain.

No, I haven't found a self help group for web-addicts, but I definitely haven't been around much lately. Various reasons, no good excuses.

Anyway, today we had a little x-mas get together after class (remember my tutoring-job?) and I somehow ended up being the last tutor left with the prof (let's call her C) and we kinda started to talk about online advertising and got to social networking and blogging, all within 1.5 hrs or so. During this time I was busy explaining the interwebs to C. She was busy wondering how I fit all of this into my already busy schedule.
I had a really good time and it was a good talk that at first I simply enjoyed for the entertainment value but on the way home it got me thinking...

why do I blog, do I spent too much time reading tweets? While I would usually wonder if I could find a more efficient feed reader, I now wonder if I maybe spend too much time online.
In the end everything will revert back to "normal" and I'll have my Rachel in the morning - to go, like my morning starbucks coffee (caramel macchiato).
I'll read my tweets on the tram and fret about the slow connection of my cell phone.

But I still think, that it's a good idea to question certain things and wonder if all the interconnectivity has a downside. I guess I needed to stop and look for a second, just to see the disadvandages and check back if I'm still ok doing what I do.

I was shocked at first, realising that I can reduce my life away from work to a two hour conversation in a cafe, but at least that gave me the reason to come back to blog...finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-42443785689628879932008-12-02T16:21:00.004+01:002008-12-02T16:36:15.261+01:00new job - brief updateToday is my third day of my new job and so far I LOVE IT!
I haven't even done anything great yet, but I'm having a lot of fun figuring out how everything works. I need to keep concentrated and I need to use my head - what a change to my previous jobs and the 3 months of unemployment. We're only two people so far, but the mothership in London is quite huge. And everytime I talk to someone they welcome me to the company like an old friend. Also they treat me like one of the big cheeses - I didn't know I was one of those, but I like it.
I'm working full time and I'm still tutorin at University, so I have a lot on my plate. Christmas is coming up and I really have no idea how to fit in all the shopping I wanna do without neglecting my family life. But I guess that come January I'll be fine.
And now, back to work...finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-80199033296386961702008-11-25T20:11:00.003+01:002008-11-25T20:22:12.366+01:00The VienneseI live in Vienna. I don't really like Vienna.
I'm officially Viennese as of yesterday.

I was born in Vienna because my parents are from here. But I grew up outside the city in Lower Austria. I went to school in Vienna, that's how near we lived.
Also it made sense to move back here when gf and I moved in together.
Yesterday, we went to get registered at the place we've been living in for quite some time. Getting registered just means that the state now knows that I live in Vienna and not in my parents home anymore.
So it hit me: I'm Viennese now. Now have something in common with THEM, who are grumpy in the morning, can't drive when it rains, snows or in general, who whine and bitch and moan all the time, who think they're so cool for living in a grey and dusty place.
Then again, nothing changes just because of a piece of paper, does it?finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-29953738336803160382008-11-21T21:20:00.001+01:002008-11-21T21:20:38.088+01:00Run away! Today starts my work at University. From now on every Thursday evening I'm the TA for one specific class.
Today we'll probably lose a lot of time with administrative stuff like, who'll get in and who will have to do the class next semester (insert explanation of complicated course system here), and other organisational stuff. But I'm thrilled about the whole thing anyway...

Keep your fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong and that the video beamer works!finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-22054376014762523852008-11-12T12:31:00.003+01:002008-11-12T12:41:20.171+01:00happy dayso I got my job yesterday and that makes me happy anyway, but gf has had a really good morning too (not sure if I'm allowed to say just yet, so I'll shut up). Happy faces all around.

but what keeps bugging me is that I can't get out of bed in the morning and I'm a morning person!
I'm used to waking up a few minutes before the alarm, being awake and getting up without a second thought - refreshed and healthy. Sometimes I'll wake up before the alarm and not get up, depending on how many minutes of sleep are still in there and how awake I am.

Lately, I wake up to the sound of the alarm and am disoriented. What's up? What's that sound? Huh? I fall back into my pillow and force myself to stay awake somehow. Before I get out of bed I have to yawn a thousand times and strech and yawn again. I more or less fall out of bed and drag myself to the kitchen...I wonder what happened?
I'm used to having these cases of spring tiredness but this isn't exactly spring. I can tell by the leaves falling and the sky being all grey.
That in itself might be a clue, but I've never been more tired in November than in any other month....

Does anyone want to share their housespun remedy?finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-56325473191890486962008-11-11T17:26:00.003+01:002008-11-11T17:45:58.334+01:00Recap: The JobAs many of you know, I had a job interview on Monday, where I was supposed to meet one of the two bosses and talk to the other one (via skype webcam - isn't technology great?).
As luck would have it, only the one boss (I'll call him the German) was there and turned out to be much more nervous than me. The other boss (The Brit) couldn't skype in because he was on a plane somewhere.
We got along well and I had a good feeling about it all, but was asked to come back another time when the Brit would have time to talk to me, so he could find out who I was too.
I was promised a call yesterday evening or today. Well, today at noon my cell phone sounds and caller ID tells me it's the German. So, I'm thinking he's got another appointment for me to meet the Brit. But...
...he starts off by telling me, that he's sorry but the Brit won't be able to meet up with me any time soon (that's where my happy-meter plummeted), but that he agreed to just trust the German and hire me (cue happy-meter).
He had really bad reception (or it was because he's still using an English cell phone provider) so I wasn't really sure what he had just said, so I made him say it again - and I hadn't heard wrong.

Officially, I'm starting in December, but I'll probably start a few days earlier because they really need me. We'll still figure that one out in the next few days, though.
I'm really excited because it's the job I wanted and I actually got it - YAY me!

I'm so happy and excited and all the rest I'm supposed to be that I don't even mind cooking today!!finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-86860903552896688262008-11-10T12:15:00.002+01:002008-11-10T12:20:26.809+01:00Job opportunitiesI had that job interview today and it seemed that it all went fine. I was quite nervous the day before but today I was too tired to freak over a job interview (I usually don't freak anyway).

When I arrived I had the feeling that that guy was much more nervous than I was, because obviously he hasn't led a job interview before. At least, none that was about a serious candidate, really.
So far, things look good and I'm really positive about it all, but I have to come back some time this week because the other boss couldn't be there. Which means, I'll go back this week to webcam-skype with him for a couple of minutes (he's always travelling).

If this really works out, I'll be obnoxiously happy, I can guarantee you that!finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-9598060111635115452008-11-09T16:31:00.002+01:002008-11-09T16:39:20.917+01:00Thanks for the encouragementSo, tomorrow I got my job interview and I'm still helping out at my dad's company tomorrow and tuesday.
It seems Wednesday and Thursday are the only two days left to prepare for my tutoring class...time kind of ran away from me this time.

Anyway, all I wanted to say was thank you to LG and Girl Politico for their encouraging comments on my job interview post - I'll try to do my best of course.

And I wanted to say thanks to Shazza for commenting the link to Smith college. I'll check it out as soon as I can. So far, I'm quite sure I can't afford it :) but I'll look into their financial aid programs. Thanks for taking the time to look for the college.

Now, I'm back to prepping for the job interview and reading some stuff for my class...have a nice week-end!finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-66766988671994456182008-11-08T17:53:00.001+01:002008-11-09T16:39:38.915+01:00Family festivitiesWe're in our dad's car getting home from a family in honor of my gran's birthday.

I've gotten used to it, but i still can't quite see past the ignorance, intolerance and lack of education that never stopped anyone from taking the loudest. Will i ever find a way to deal with that - other than sticking my fingers into my ears pretending not to hear them?

---- Sent using a Sony Ericsson videophonefinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-71451572579633854772008-11-07T11:06:00.002+01:002008-11-07T11:19:44.574+01:00I spiral binded today......which I have never done before.
But that's not the big news.

I got a job interview Monday morning at a job I do not only need to make a bunch of money, but also I would LOVE to have because it sounds great.

It's a British architectural company opening a branch in Vienna and I'd be the person to do all the administration and organisation of exactly that - Opening the offices.

I'm kinda nervous though, because this is really something, not some lame job I can do in my sleep, but something that actually poses some kind of challenge, something that gives me something to do.
Also, they don't have a problem if I have to be at University for my Tutoring job, in fact they would encourage me to do so and support my MA degree ambitions.
Anyhoo, I don't want to give to much away, but I wanted to share the excitement a little bit...finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12854271.post-75208142079005768162008-11-06T12:01:00.003+01:002008-11-06T12:19:26.650+01:00the joys of a proportional representation systemIn Austria we don't have a winner take all system, we distribute our votes proportionally into seats in the parliament.
That of course means that after the elections it can tak forever until a coalition sees itself fit to go to work. That is why they prolonged the legislative period from 4 to 5 years. Nevermind, that the coalition fails every two years and we re-elect the same parties. I don't think I have to stress that not an awful lot of work gets done and quite a bit of controversial policies drop under the table.

Austria held elections on 09/28 and the parties are still working on a coalition. And that in itself would be worth a long post, rambling about how they started putting together their negotiation teams AFTER the election and so on and so forth, but I won't do that.

Instead I simply wanted to state that concerning economic policies the two people negociating are Doris Bures (SPÖ) and Karlheinz Kopf (ÖVP). The SPÖ is the leading party and I think we all agree that the economy is pretty fucked up right now and therefore the economy policy negotiations are important and should be viewed as such.
Doris Bures was a dental assistant before she became a politician. When she was a politician she was in charge of gender and housing issues - one might say the stereotypical "womens' issues".
Why do they put her up to discuss economy with a guy who worked in this field all his life in various positions? Is there a chance that SPÖ-issues will even be considered? Will she give in before he even has to argue? I don't wanna say that she's not good at negociating - I don't know that - but does she have any qualification?
Am I the only one who thinks this is a joke?finnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17189959037948470966noreply@blogger.com0
